Instead of paying the final installment of a 10-year, $2.5 million program to cover start-up costs for the Hatfield-McCoy ATV trails this summer, a bill that passed the Senate (HB4355) Wednesday would not only require the state Parkways Authority to continue the payments indefinitely – but to kick in an additional $100,000 a year.
Senate Minority Leader Don Caruth, R-Mercer, amended the bill, which continues the annual $250,000 Hatfield-McCoy payment. Caruth’s amendment would increase the amount by $100,000 a year, with the extra money going for planning and development of a proposed equestrian park in Mercer County.
Caruth said he understands there are private investors “on the sidelines” if the proposed park moves forward.
