Oh, what would this do to Federal highway funding? They need those Federal dollars in Minnesota these days. Remember back in the ’80’s when the Feds used the threat of holding Federal highway funds back from states that didn’t raise their drinking ages from 18 to 21? Does Ms. Kahn not know her history? Some state lawmakers have introduced bills that would lower the drinking age in Minnesota from 21 to 18.Rep. Phyllis Kahn of Minneapolis said lowering the drinking age could decrease binge drinking among young adults because it would make alcohol less forbidden.Kahn admits her House bill has little chance of becoming law.
The bill would allow people ages 18 to 20 to drink alcohol at places that carry liquor licenses, but it wouldn’t allow them to buy alcohol at stores. A similar bill is in the Senate.
The Federal Minimum Drinking Age Act would only withhold 10% of the total federal funds allotted for highways. According to one Republican sponsor of the house version of the bill, the idea is that there would be more money coming in through liquor taxes, since there would be, in general, an increase in purchases. So, it wouldn’t make a huge difference. Further, withholding funds is not a foregone conclusion anyway — Congress could pass a waiver.
I think its a great idea. Many young adults 18-20 have little to no bills and a decent amount of income. With that, they will definetly be going out to the bars and bringing in more income for the bars, which will help all our economy by letting the small and large businesses take in more money! Keep it up!
