We imagine that Connecticut taxpayers want one thing on this issue – no more free money for corrupt politicians. They probably don’t care how their leaders get there either.
HARTFORD – Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell and state Senate leaders yesterday urged the House of Representatives to abandon efforts to retroactively revoke the pensions of corrupt state officials.
They fear that including the controversial measure in a broader ethics reform package would kill the entire bill this legislative session.
“Whether it’s legally defensible or not, retroactivity should be off the table,” said Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, R-Fairfield.
But state Rep. Christopher Caruso, D-Bridgeport, who is helping to spearhead the legislation, said he would not back down.
“When you talk to the public, the public wants to go back. They feel it makes perfect sense,” Caruso said. “The public is still upset that many politicians have ripped them off.”
Who cares if politicians are on the take from the pen? The last thing peeps want is to make pols in Connecticut – or anywhere – accountable!
