Crumley Seeking GOP Nomination For N.C. Attorney General

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Bob Crumley says Republicans need to unite behind one candidate to challenge incumbent Attorney General Roy Cooper, and he says he's the man.

Crumley, an Asheboro trial lawyer, spends three to five days a week traveling the state trying to round up support for the GOP nomination that won't be decided for 18 months.

“If we can become the consensus candidate and save our money for the general election, that's just smart politics,” Crumley said recently.

Cooper was re-elected to a second term in 2004. He told supporters this past summer he planned to seek another four-year term. Wendell Sawyer, a Greensboro attorney, has also said he's considering a run for the GOP nomination.

Crumley's Web site already includes endorsements from Republican Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry and U.S. Rep. Howard Coble of Greensboro.

Crumley, who unsuccessfully ran for the state Senate in 2002, is well known in the Greensboro area thanks to advertising promoting his law firm. His campaign has raised more than $152,000 since January 2005, according to campaign finance reports.
