Anyone care to hazard a guess on how many Alabama House members will be subject to direct mail pieces talking about their failure to take a stand on abolishing the grocery tax?
MONTGOMERY β The Alabama House approved a bill Tuesday that would remove the state sales tax from groceries, a potentially historic move aimed at helping low-income households after decades of mostly ignoring their tax burden. The House voted 63-38 to approve the proposed constitutional amendment that would lower the overall tax bill for low and middle income state residents, while increasing taxes for the more well-to-do taxpayers.
Some House members broke into applause when the number of βyesβ votes reached 63, the exact number needed to pass a constitutional amendment in the House.
