Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox on Monday threw his support behind a Republican senator’s proposed changes to Michigan’s individual health insurance market, saying they would do the most to make Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan use excess reserves to help more people buy health insurance.
At a Lansing news briefing, Cox called for greater accountability of Blue Cross lobbying expenses, hefty executive salaries and $2.4 billion in reserves. He pointed to a 42% increase in pay and compensation for Blue Cross executives between 2004 and 2006, and $493 million spent by Blue Cross and its subsidiaries to buy other for-profit insurance companies< since 2005.
