State legislators returned to the state Capitol yesterday after a 13-day recess and were greeted with a long wish list from colleagues and good-government groups. On the annual Reform Day in Albany, watchdog groups urged the Legislature to strengthen ethics laws, tighten restrictions on campaign-finance rules, approve an independent redistricting process and change legislative procedures.
The good-government groups lobbied lawmakers as legislative leaders outlined their own priorities for the remainder of the legislative session, which is expected to end in late June.
Assembly Democrats said they wanted to revise laws regarding the state’s Empire Zone tax-break program for businesses and bolster laws on redevelopment of former industrial sites, known as brownfields. They also plan to seek a minimum-wage increase and an expansion of the state’s Family Leave Act.
“We have a number of bills that we think are important to do before the end of the session,” said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan.
