Paranoid Democrats are the best kind!  If New York Dems were really smart – they’d give pass the gas tax reduction, tell industry that they’re watching, make sure they understand the market, and then if prices go up without just cause – bam!  Then they have a real reason to distrust the oil and gas folks.  Until then though, they’re just playing politics.  From the Ithaca Journal:

Republicans in the state Legislature on Wednesday called to repeal state gas taxes this summer, saying it would offer a stimulus to the New York economy.

But the Democratic-controlled Assembly doused the idea, saying there’s no assurance that a gas-tax suspension would fuel lower prices at the pump.

“There is absolutely no guarantee that tax savings would be passed on to consumers,” said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan. “In fact, I believe that oil companies will simply raise their prices to eliminate any cost savings for the public.”
