Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway, Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo and Auditor Crit Luallen joined Yarmuth in calling for Fischer to “take the high road” and avoid “divisive character attacks.”

But at a press conference, Fischer said he would continue to “tell the truth” about Lunsford’s record at Vencor, the company he founded that was forced into bankruptcy in 1999 after the federal government cut reimbursement fees to nursing homes.

Lunsford and Fischer are two of seven candidates in the May 20 Democratic primary vying to face Republican incumbent Sen. Mitch McConnell in the fall.

Allison Haley, Lunsford’s press secretary, noted that the letter was written by “a number of influential Democrats,” but if Fischer’s campaign chooses to ignore it, “that is their prerogative.”
