From NWANews.com:
Gov. Mike Beebe said Wednesday that he stands by Democratic Party Chairman Bill Gwatney and agrees with Gwatney’s recent letter that elected Democrats shouldn’t help elect Republicans.
Gwatney said he told Beebe beforehand that he planned to write the letter and that the governor didn’t advise against it.
The chairman’s recently disclosed April 23 letter to Democratic officials followed news that incoming state House Speaker Robbie Wills, D-Conway, was participating in a fundraiser for Rep. Bryan King, R-Eureka Springs.
Gwatney’s letter, which did not mention Wills or any other legislator specifically, said such actions “work against their own self-interest as well as the interest of the Democratic Party.” Beebe, a former senator from Searcy, and Gwatney, a former senator from Jacksonville, have been friends for years. Gwatney was Beebe’s pick to lead the party.
