Pretty classy. From nwi.com:
the General Assembly is losing a towering, trusted legislator.
Meeks, a Republican from LaGrange, is not only a big man physically. He became a big-time player in the Legislature in recent years with a tight grip on the state’s purse strings. And he earned respect the old-fashioned way _ by working hard, talking straight, being upfront, keeping his word.
So it was no surprise that so many people packed the committee room where the Senate Appropriations chairman held his public meetings to hear him announce last week that he was dropping his bid for a sixth term this year.
“Bob Meeks will go into the legislative hall of fame, and I’ll be the one to nominate him,” said Democratic House Speaker Patrick Bauer of South Bend, who negotiated several two-year state budgets with Meeks.
