From the Jamestown Sun:
Voters in the June 10 primary election will be given the opportunity to indicate their level of trust in the integrity of the state Legislature. Measure No. 1 on the ballot would repeal language in the state constitution that prevents the appointment of state legislators to state positions for which they voted salary increases.
The pertinent language in Section 6, Article IV reads as follows:
During the term for which elected, no member of the legislative assembly may be appointed to any full-time office that has been created, or to any office for which the compensation has been increased, by the legislative assembly during that term. Measure No. 1 would repeal the bold-faced language and leave the rest of the section intact.
Measure No. 1 was introduced by the floor leaders of both political parties in the 2007 Assembly. It came out of the House and Senate committees with unanimous “do pass” recommendations and passed by 83 to 3 in the House and 40 to 7 in the Senate.
