Currently the treasurer, secretary of state, and the comptroller are chose by the legislature, and the AG is chosen by the state supreme court.
(State Senator Rosalind) Kurita (D-Clarksville) wants to amend the state constitution to allow the people of Tennessee to elect those offices.
“Everyone across the board should have an opportunity,” Kurita told a gathering of the Nashville Women’s Political Caucus Tuesday. “I want us all to have a chance, a shot.”…
Last month, Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey (R-Blountville) appointed Kurita to serve in the Senate’s No. 2 position, Speaker Pro Tem. That came after Kurita cast a pivotal vote that helped elect the Republican.
Senate Republican Leader Mark Norris (R-Collierville) said the GOP is going to give the idea of popularly electing constitutional officers “increasingly serious consideration.”
