From the Argus Leader:
Twenty-two sitting lawmakers battled in Tuesday’s primary election, the preliminary heat for a ballot spot in November and perhaps a seat in the state Legislature.
Most were leading in early returns, whether incumbents running for another term or term-limited legislators trying to switch chambers, of more than 30 primary contests scattered across the state.
A notable exception was Rep. Tom Hackl, R-Hoven. The three-term House member trailed newcomer Corey Brown of Gettysburg by a 60-40 margin for the Senate Republican nomination in final unofficial counting.
Reached by phone about 10 p.m., Hackl said he was about to place a congratulatory call to Brown.
“It’s an example of democracy at its best. That’s about all you can say,” Hackl said. “I had a good three terms.”
