From WAFB.com:
Hines, a Democrat from New Orleans, says he has always been against the idea of the pay increase for lawmakers. Hines says every state legislator he’s spoken to has been inundated with calls from the public, urging them to vote against the measure.
House Speaker Jim Tucker walked the House floor early Friday, tallying votes and asking lawmakers whether they would support the bill. He said the House will debate the proposal by Senator Ann Duplessis in the afternoon. The House recessed for lunch without taking a vote on the measure. The House resumes work at 1:00 p.m.
The proposal has generated outcries of opposition. Political blogs, radio call-in shows and newspaper pages are filled with tirades against the proposal and urges for Governor Bobby Jindal to veto it if lawmakers pass it.
With the deplorable state most of our citizens are in, I consider it unconscionable for such a step to be taken at this particular time. While everyone in this state is struggling just to make ends meet, and when jobs are lost due to outsourcing, and while everyone else is lucky to get a 2 – 21/2% raise. and usually none at all, the Legislators want a 300% increase! Corruption is no different now than it was before Gov. Jindal was elected, despite his promises. He has the power to veto this and refuses to do so. What he gains by the lack of intestinal fortitude to veto the “Amazing Raise” is my personal promise to do all I can to make sure he is not elected for anything ever again. I don’t know if he cares what Jesus thinks or not, and probably doesn’t. And I’m SURE the ones getting the raise don’t even know who Jehova is, but those of us who pray, will certainly be praying for them to be blessed with a conscience. If they want to make money, they need to go into different fields. Public service is just that. Service. Do our armed forces who lay their life on the line get the same type pay increase now? I am extremely disillusioned and disappointed in Gov. Jindal for not vetoing something that is obviously NOT wanted by his constituents.
I wish I could pray “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” But I’m afraid that would be incorrect – they know very well what they are doing and will continue to do until someone with authority has the integrity to stop them.
