From the Baton Rouge Advocate:

Veteran District Attorney Buddy Caldwell of Tallulah said he will challenge Attorney General Charles Foti in the Oct. 20 election.

Foti’s arrest of a doctor and two nurses in connection with deaths in the wake of Hurricane Katrina “was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Caldwell said.

“Nearly every district attorney has suffered a great deal of embarrassment” because of Foti’s publicity-seeking, Caldwell said.

“You wouldn’t arrest a doctor and two nurses unless you can prove the cause of death. You didn’t even have proof of the cause of death,” said Caldwell.

“You need to have someone capable who is not going to be making these horrible decisions in the criminal law,” he said.

Caldwell, a Democrat, has been the criminal prosecutor for 30 years in East Carroll, Madison and Tensas parishes. He has been president of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association and has lobbied for and against changes in criminal laws.

This item was buried in the political notebook, and doesn’t appear to have been picked up anywhere else.  Question for Caldwell is whether or not he’s challenging Foti as a Democrat, or as a Republican.

Stay very tuned.
