Also yesterday, Dann’s predecessor, Republican Jim Petro, told The Dispatch that he might be willing to jump into the special election to fill out the remaining two years of Dann’s term.
No Republican is publicly in the running. The state GOP canceled a central committee vote scheduled for today to nominate a candidate.
“I have not said no, but I have not said yes,” Petro said. “I promised to give it some thought over the weekend.”
Petro acknowledged that party officials were making a strong pitch for him to run and “I haven’t unequivocally said no.”
Dann, a Democrat, resigned May 14 after a sexual-harassment scandal rocked his office. Yesterday he explained several of the expenditures that Brunner’s office had questioned:
