From the New York Post:
Bloomberg, who sources say is mulling a run for governor in 2010, left the GOP last year and became an independent, but his wealth remains a big source of support for Senate Republicans.
Sheekey detailed for Meier an analysis that heavily Democratic New York state is becoming like Massachusetts, where one party rules and there will potentially be no Republican lawmakers in leadership positions, the source said.
He described the “downhill spiral” of the state GOP, which he said appears to be accelerating under current GOP chairman Joe Mondello, the source said.
Sheekey then asked Meier if he were interested in running the GOP, and the senator responded yes, the source added, saying they would have additional discussions. Bloomberg came in only at the tail end of the meeting.
Meier, who gave up his state Senate seat in an unsuccessful run for Congress in 2006, is a former Oneida County executive. His home region centered around Utica is one of the most economically distressed areas in New York.
A Bloomberg spokesman declined comment.
Meier would only say he was in the city for meetings and stopped by City Hall to chat with Sheekey about “a great number of subjects.”
