From inbusiness:
In the days since the special session ended, I have not heard anyone say the words that Gov. Jim Gibbons especially and lawmakers, to a lesser extent, deserve to have hurled at them: Thank you.
Thank you for balancing the budget. Thank you for not raising taxes. And thank you for doing it all in 12 hours.
This is truly a bipartisan miracle, the continued slashing of state services now at $1.2 billion and counting. Seventeen percent of the budget has vanished in the space of a few months, with more to come when they all meet again in February.
Thank you so much.
“In the end,” the governor told us in a post-bill-signing news release, “the agreement lawmakers reached was very similar to my recommendations. With the discretion I gave them, though, they included some measures that I would have preferred been excluded, particularly reducing the funding for textbooks for our schoolchildren. I believe it would be more prudent to have targeted reductions to operating budgets of state agencies and protect these valuable resources. Still, I commend the Legislature for (its) willingness to make these difficult choices in these tough economic times.”
They made different choices than he would have, being The Education Governor, but he commends them for making difficult choices. Yes, indeed. Thank you, again.
