Dem A.G. Coakley seems a bit out of the mainstream on this one. Or maybe she’s just not as disgusted by child sex crimes as the rest of the Bay State is. From the Boston Herald:
“It’s clear our number one goal is to have something in the statute that sets a minimum sentence for the first offense of child rape,” said Sen. Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester). “If we can reach an accord we certainly would like to do that.”
Officials with Coakley’s office, who Tarr said initiated the meeting, were worried any move to strengthen the sex offender bill could kill it. Lawmakers must approve the bill before July 31 for it to pass this year.
Coakley supports a watered-down version of the bill already passed by the House that applies mandatory minimums on a first offense only if a perv forcibly rapes a child.
As originally proposed, Jessica’s Law – named after a slain Florida girl who was raped and murdered by a repeat sex offender – would jail a child rapist for a minimum of 25 years for their first offense even if they don’t use force.
Tarr and other Senate Republicans said they would be willing to accept a mandatory minimum sentence lower than 25 years, but did not say how low.
Victims’ rights advocate Laurie Myers believes the compromise might be the best lawmakers can do.
“I would like it to be 25 years, but that’s my personal opinion. These offenders get out and they commit more crimes,” Myers said.
