Leave it to these Democrats to not take a leading role in solving problems for New Jersey. It’s always been easier to say no to a problem, than to try and figure out a solution that may actually work. Stunts like the one you’ll read about below only do one thing – garner short term headlines that do zero to solve long term problems. Join the RSLC now – and help us elect more commonsense state and local officials who are committed to solving problems – not creating them. From PressofAtlanticCity.com:
BELMAR – Monday might not have been the best beach day, but Democratic officials gathered beachside at the borough’s Taylor Pavilion in the morning and repeated their opposition to offshore drilling with tales of potential environmental disasters.
“If you think that people would still spend their money dining while oil is lapping upon the shores, you’re insane,” Mayor Kenneth E. Pringle said.
Behind the officials in suits, the flat gray sky blended imperceptibly into the flat gray ocean. A handful of people specked the tan beach sand behind them.
Led by Gov. Jon S. Corzine, Pringle and U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., and U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, D-6th, said the state needs to develop alternative energy sources while keeping the beaches clean for tourists. They said any oil recovered would be minimal and wouldn’t be available for years.
It was shortsighted, they said, considering potential impacts to the state’s tourism industry, which pays $16.6 billion to 500,000 people while providing the state $5.5 billion in taxes.
They blamed high oil prices on speculation, a weak dollar and a poorly regulated oil market.
