PA: Democrats Call For Dem House Leader to Step Aside

Time for Pennsylvania Democrats to hit the deck. Now it’s every Democrat candidate, and incumbent out for himself. There will increased incidents of throwing under the bus, indignant righteousness, and a general spread of throw the bums outitis spreading among DEMOCRAT circles in the days and weeks ahead as these state and local Dems try to keep this scandal from defining them this election. From the Pittsburgh Tribune:

Democratic Rep. Harry Readshaw of Carrick today called for House Majority Leader Bill DeWeese to resign his leadership position, in the aftermath of a grand jury presentment alleging widespread corrruption in the House Democratic Caucus.

DeWeese did not return phone or e-mail messages left with his Harrisburg office and at his district office in Greene County. A worker in his Waynesburg office said she wasn’t sure where he was.

Attorney General Tom Corbett’s office filed charges against 12 people last week, including former Rep. Mike Veon of Beaver County; a sitting legislator, Rep. Sean Ramaley of Economy; and 10 aides. Among the legislative staffers charged with theft, conspiracy and conflicts of interest is Michael Manzo, DeWeese’s former chief of staff.

DeWeese, who has not been charged, has been the House Democratic leader since 1990, except for 1993 and 1994 when he was speaker of the House. He has maintained throughout the corruption investigation he did nothing wrong, saying he wasn’t aware of the alleged activity.
