Democratic attorney general nominee Chris Koster ventured into hostile territory today, and the audience had some tough questions for the Republican-turned Democrat.

Koster gave his pitch to Democrats gathered in Columbia for the Muleskinners Club, the political home base of Koster’s former opponent, Rep. Jeff Harris, D-Columbia.

The first question: “What really made you switch” to the Democratic Party, asked Diane Booth. “Because, from an outsider looking in, it seemed very opportunistic.”

Koster said he began thinking “real hard” about a switch in the spring of 2007. The key, Koster said, was the Republican Party’s desire to “criminalize the work of world-class scientists” doing stem cell research. Many GOP senators privately shared his support of the research but were unwilling to do so publicly, he said.
