From The Morning Call:
Yet, in an average year, at least two-thirds of the hundreds of candidates and committees filing reports insist on doing it the old-fashioned way — on paper, said Jessica Myers, chief of campaign finance and lobbyist disclosure for the State Department.
This year, that includes all six major-party candidates for the statewide offices of attorney general, auditor general and treasurer.
What most taxpayers don’t know is that they are shelling out more than $50,000 a year for a private contractor to manually enter that data into state computers. In electronic form, it can readily be viewed or downloaded and analyzed in a spreadsheet by anyone who wants to know who is injecting all the money that lubricates a particular candidate’s campaign.
