Republicans now have an opportunity to pursue true ethics reform in state government. The ethical reforms seized upon in the wake of Tennessee Waltz were not particularly meaningful, and new offices created to deal with ethical lapses are poorly funded. Furthermore, the openness of state government when it comes to public records and open meetings has never been recognized by Bredesen or the Democrats in the Legislature as an ethics issue.

The Republican Party in Tennessee has a remarkable opportunity to make good on all their promises and statements leading up to this election year. GOP leaders in the Legislature should start by rejecting the current culture of the Legislature and moving on instead to the kind of reform state government in Tennessee needs.
