From the Chicago Tribune:
The state has subpoenaed road-salt suppliers for bidding information in connection with an investigation of why salt prices have as much as tripled this year, the Illinois attorney general said Monday.
Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan and her staff met with about 50 municipal representatives Monday to get information about their bidding processes and provide preliminary findings based on initial interviews with salt suppliers, Madigan spokeswoman Robyn Ziegler said.
The Illinois Department of Transportation paid about $40 per ton for road salt last year. Prices this year have almost doubled on average, and some municipalities and counties are paying as much as $140 a ton.
