MO: Ethics Commission Drops Fundraising Complaint

This isn’t resolution to an issue – this letting it die.  What’s the point of having a regulatory body to enforce the laws, if the enforcers can selectively choose how they do their job.  Here’s an idea – if the required number of votes can’t be attained because members recuse themselves, then the investigation gets kicked up to an independent prosecutor.  Now that would put some teeth in the law.  Maybe Governor-Elect Nixon can make that a priority.  From STLtoday:

Attorney General-elect Chris Koster won’t face any action from the Missouri Ethics Commission for complaints about his fundraising.

The six-member Ethics Commission said Wednesday that the case against Koster failed to receive the four votes needed to proceed to a hearing. The vote to go forward was 3-1, with two members recusing themselves. As a result, the case is over, said the Ethics Commission’s interim executive director, Stacey Heislen.

An ethics complaint filed in June alleged that Koster — a Democratic state senator — laundered money through various committees to his campaign account to get around contribution limits. Those donation limits have since been repealed.
