From Capitol Confidential:
Health care and education are the biggest parts of the state budget, aid to local governments comes in third. Voters seem to want to cut local government spending more, but localities often choose to make up the shortfall from state cuts with increases to property taxes, which doesn’t alleviate the problem.
Thus, the challenges of governing in bad economic times – everyone acknowledges the problem, but no one wants to be the bad guy to make the cuts. But that’s why those leaders are paid the big bucks – to muster up some political courage and actually lead. It’ll be interesting to see where voters place blame if the leaders can’t come to a consensus on cuts tomorrow.
