Hmmm…a petition signed by a miniscule percentage of the population of Arkansas. And, how many of those signatures aren’t from folks with names like Flozell Adams, Marc Colombo, Leonard Davis, or Doug Free (Who are they? Look here to find out). From Arkansas News Bureau:
Gov. Mike Beebe said Tuesday he does not think he has the authority to impose a moratorium on construction of new coal-fired power plants in Arkansas.
“My research is that I don’t have the authority to go issue a moratorium under existing state and federal law,” Beebe told reporters at the Capitol after a 40-minute meeting with opponents of a planned $1.6 billion coal-fired plant near Fulton in Hempstead County.
Opponents, presented the governor with 3,700 signatures on petitions asking that the project be halted until environmental concerns are addressed, said they believe the governor does have the authority to issue a temporary moratorium. They said they plan to ask Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel his thoughts on the issue during a meeting Friday.
