Poor Patrick Quinn – he’s stuck between the rock (no, not him) and a hard place. Demand to appoint – and the appointment is 100% suspect from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Hello, Chief of Staff’s office) all the way to the first political contribution he takes in a Governor. Wait for the election, and have this guy, this guy, this guy, and maybe even this gal mad because the Dems lose a seat and a major political symbol. Tough spot to be in. From Chicago Tribune:
Lt. Gov. Patrick Quinn pulled a power play Thursday, calling on state lawmakers to immediately impeach Gov. Rod Blagojevich so that he could quickly replace the governor and select Illinois’ next U.S. senator.
“It is an urgent matter,” Quinn said. “This is an emergency. Illinois is in a crisis.”
Quinn’s plea came amid a growing call from rank-and-file House lawmakers to start impeachment proceedings, turning up the pressure on Blagojevich to resign. The governor, who has remained publicly silent, came to work in Chicago for the second straight day since the FBI hauled him away in handcuffs before dawn Tuesday.
