From the Pasadena Star-News:
GOP members in the Assembly, however, stood united against tax increases on the argument that it would hurt the down economy and cost more jobs in a heavily taxed state. What Democrats called an investment in the state’s education system, Republicans characterized as bloated government.
“People are hurting, jobs are on the line,” said Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Auburn, before a largely party-line vote. “We’ve got to solve this not just for the short term.”
The Assembly voted 48-27 on the budget cuts and 46-27 on the tax hike, failing to reach the necessary two-thirds threshold. Afterward, members were told to remain in the Capitol while staff worked up a version of the Republicans’ proposal, presumably for another vote.
