When the General Assembly passed a bill in June allowing the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles to create a license plate with an emblem of a cross on it and the words “I Believe,” it was pretty clear it wouldn’t be long before the state wound up in a court battle centered on separation of church and state.
Sure enough, shortly after Gov. Mark Sanford allowed the bill to become law — without his signature — Washington, D.C.-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State sued the state in U.S. District Court. Americans United (AU) claimed the state-sanctioned plate unconstitutionally endorsed one religion over another.
