A commonsense idea from a commonsense Republican leader. From the Post and Courier:
S.C. Attorney General and likely 2010 gubernatorial hopeful Henry McMaster appeared before Charleston County Republicans Monday evening to encourage them to support his efforts to abolish parole in this state.
McMaster supports bills in both the House and Senate that would end parole for violent crimes, essentially ensuring that those convicted would serve at least 85 percent of their sentence — or 100 percent if they don’t behave well behind bars.
The proposal also calls for establishing a “middle court” that would handle nonviolent offenders without sending them to prison.
