Some might argue there’s been a breakdown in the representative Democracy there in Tennessee. Others will argue that voters wanted Republican control of the Tennessee House, and that’s what you’ve got – just not the in shape that some had hoped. This drama is far from over. From the Tennessean:
Tuesday’s surprise vote for Republican Kent Williams as House speaker infuriated fellow GOP lawmakers as well as observers that had gathered to see an expected handoff from Democrat Jimmy Naifeh to Jason Mumpower, the GOP nominee for the position.
As the vote took place, the House chamber at moments erupted into near bedlam, with spectators raining down boos, hisses and angry shouts, which was quieted at one point after Naifeh threatened to have unruly audience members removed.
