So, it looks like Fumo was just half-smart. Wiping out his emails was one thing – but he kind of forgot about the black bag jobs he needed to execute his operation clean sweep – cleaning out the inboxes of his email recipients. From the Philadelphia Inquirer:
As FBI agents Vicki Humphreys and Kathleen T. McAfee investigated former State Sen. Vincent J. Fumo for the possible extortion of two big corporations, they again and again ran into a puzzling wall.

Yesterday, Humphreys detailed the FBI’s probe publicly for the first time. She explained how investigators came to suspect that Fumo was staying a step ahead of them – making sure to deny them potentially key evidence by destroying thousands of e-mails.
