AZ: Senate President Says No to Any Tax Increase

“That is not sustainable,” Burns continued. “So there has to be a look at the costs, or at the spending side, or we’ll never get this problem under control.”

The latest figures show a $1.6 billion gap between revenues and expenses for the balance of this fiscal year, with a potential $3 billion deficit next year. A list of options to deal with that, drawn up by key Republican lawmakers, is built largely on slashing spending, including cutting $900 million in funding for public schools and $300 million during the next 18 months in state aid to universities.
