What Michigan has lacked, though, is a method by which citizens could conveniently obtain that information. That should change in coming weeks, either by executive order or legislative action.
Republicans in the Michigan House want legislation to create a searchable state database on the Web. They point to a similar system in Missouri. Republican Attorney General Mike Cox also has been a vocal advocate for Web-based financial data.
So far, the Granholm administration has been less than enthusiastic. It has endorsed the idea of more transparency; the hows of such work are where the momentum fades.
