Lawmakers have yet to release many specific proposals, but interest groups have already begun to ramp up their opposition. They warn elected officials that tinkering with economic incentives could further harm Iowa’s economy.
“Anything you want to cut, there’s a constituency attached to it that will say, ‘Don’t do it.’ What people need to recognize is this is state spending and it’s not especially transparent,” said Sen. Joe Bolkcom, D-Iowa City, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.
“We have not done a very good job making sure that what we’re investing in provides the job benefits and the economic boosts that the originators of all these tax credits intended.”
