MT: Spending Up Despite Revenue Forecasts

The session’s major budget bill, which hits the House floor Monday with an $8.1 billion price tag, is being called a tight budget – but it’s not really cutting anything.

From human service programs to prisons to public schools, House Bill 2 increases state spending by $474 million over the next two years, a 6.2 percent rise.

HB2 also appears poised to pass the full House early this week, with few if any changes, despite Friday’s report that state tax revenue forecasts will be down another $40 million through 2011.

“I think the skids are greased,” said House Minority Leader Scott Sales, R-Bozeman.
