Some state workers reacted angrily Thursday to what they said is another example of Gov. Ed Rendell offering a double standard in this tough economy — working to benefit his friends while asking others to sacrifice.
On the same day that Rendell administration officials met with union leaders to threaten rolling furloughs of state workers, a Philadelphia newspaper reported that Rendell recently hired a public relations person for $100,000.
Meanwhile, thousands of state employees could be asked to take 30 unpaid days off during the next 15 months — the equivalent of six missed paychecks — if union leaders don’t agree to other ways of saving $89 million in personnel costs by the end of the month.
