Even worse for Democrats, Attorney General Bob McDonnell, whose home locality is Virginia Beach, is all but certain to carry the district by a wide margin. McDonnell carried Virginia Beach with 57% of the vote when he ran for Attorney General in 2005 against State Senator Creigh Deeds (D-Bath), even as Tim Kaine carried Virginia Beach for the Democrats by barely one point.
While statewide Democratic candidates must focus on stanching the bleeding in suburban Virginia Beach, Joe Bouchard needs to find a way to win. Bouchard needs to hope that one term of incumbency will enable Virginia Beach voters to push the button for McDonnell and Bouchard without any sense of cognitive dissonance.
