The firm, Driscoll & Fleeter, is sharing its work with the governor’s staff and influential lawmakers, while the state Department of Education has relinquished much of its normal analytical role in the process. The Education Department’s work is public, while the consulting firm’s is not.
Strickland, a Democrat, made reforming Ohio’s school-funding system a 2006 campaign promise and a measure of his success or failure in office. Now his detractors say he’s too tightly controlling the process and leaving lawmakers and citizens in the dark.
“We’re supposed to be having a legislative debate here, and it feels like the debate is going on in secret,” said Sen. Jon Husted, the former GOP House speaker.
