Crowded Field for Alabama Governor? Not So Much

With still a lot of time until next year’s party primaries – 423 days – the races in both parties have been most notable for who’s gotten out, not who’s gotten in.

There’s one exception, U.S. Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham. Two months ago he jumped into the race on the Democratic side and in doing so made national news. Davis is seeking to become the state’s first African-American governor.

The list of those who have opted not to run has grown much faster than that of who is running. The count-me-out list includes Speaker of the House Seth Hammett, Congressman Jo Bonner, Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Attorney General Troy King, Public Service Commissioner Susan Parker and one big new name last week – Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr.
