IA: Democrat Leader Vows to Avoid Same Sex Marriage Issue

That is “exceedingly unlikely,” said Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs. He vowed Monday not to take up the issue in the Senate.

But for gay marriage opponents angered by Friday’s court ruling, there is another option: a constitutional convention.

The process is a little muddy, said Iowa Secretary of State Michael Mauro, because neither the Iowa Constitution nor Iowa law dictates the parameters of a constitutional convention. When a convention would occur, how long it would be, how delegates would be chosen and how many delegates would be there – all of that would be decided by the Legislature.
