This is an interesting story. Wonder why Senator Durbin is so forthcoming about a phone conversation from November ’08? Trying to avod any Burris-like foul ups? Get that stinky Blago call out now, before it gets floated through some other unfriendly channel. From Individual.com:
Shortly before then- Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested on corruption charges, he floated the idea of appointing Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan to the U.S. Senate in return for legislative help from her father, the powerful state House Speaker Michael Madigan, said a spokesman for U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.
Blagojevich raised the possibility in a phone call with Durbin, but the senator concluded that the governor, a political enemy of the Madigans, was not serious, so Durbin did not pass on the idea to them or any intermediary, said Joe Shoemaker, a Durbin spokesman.
“There was no deal being cooked,” Shoemaker said. “He didn’t think the governor was offering it in a serious way.”
