Another bright spot for Republicans in 2008 was the Legislature. They took over the Senate, registering one of the few Republican takeovers nationally and held their own in the evenly split House.

The Lee Newspapers State Bureau asked Republicans to diagnose the health of the party and tell what it does well and where it needs improvements.

“What I think we did well was organizing and funding local races,” Rehberg said. “This was one of the toughest environments we could be in because of the huge presence of out-of-state Democrats, probably driven by the battle between (Hillary) Clinton and (Barack) Obama.”
