GOP Aims to Takeover Alabama Legislature

The 2010 elections will bring new faces to some of Alabama’s most powerful offices, but state political leaders predict little or no change in southwest Alabama legislative districts.

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Mike Hubbard, a state representative from Auburn, said he is targeting about two dozen House and Senate races to try to oust Democrats and give his party control of the Legislature.

But Hubbard said no Mobile or Baldwin County seats were on his list.

Hubbard, who serves as House minority leader, said only one area Republican — state Sen. Ben Brooks of Mobile — might be in for a close race. Hubbard said southwest Alabama’s legislative districts tend to be heavily skewed toward one party or the other, giving incumbents a big advantage.
