From q13Fox.com:
SEATTLE – A state committee is considering a proposal to force sex offenders to tell police more than just their home address. They’re studying the possibility of forcing offenders to register e-mail addresses, blogs and usernames on social networking sites.
State Attorney General Rob McKenna supports the proposal “when Myspace searched for sex offenders with Myspace pages they found 90,000 of them, nationwide.” McKenna went on to tell Q13 Fox News “We call them predators because they go after prey where they’re going to find them and, in this case, it’s online.”
It’s not a new idea, 21 other states already require it. Washington’s Sex Offender Policy Board is looking at the idea and will forward their recommendations to the legislature. Ultimately, state lawmakers will decide if offenders have to pass along their online information.
Rep. Kirk Pearson tried to push similar legislation in 2008 but the bill died in the State Senate. Pearson believes it could pass if re-introduced next year “my hope is, they see the need for it.” Pearson adds “we don’t want them to have access to children.”
