From WSAZ.com:
BELLEFONTE, Ky. (WSAZ) — Many people say a race for a local State Senate seat in Kentucky has plenty of partisan national implications.
So much so, in fact, that the political heavy hitters are coming out in force prior to Kentucky’s 18th District State Senate race, which now includes a third candidate.
A farmer from Russell, Ky., is running as an independent. Guy Gibbons joins Democrat state Rep. Robin Webb and Republican dermatologist Dr. Jack Ditty in the quest for retired Republican Charlie Borders’ senate seat in Frankfort.
The local race has had unprecedented TV and radio advertising. Many say it’s as much about gaining partisan power as much as the usual issues. On Tuesday, the nation’s G.O.P. top gun hit the local stump, with opponents firing right back.
U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said he’s campaigning for Ditty because in the state senate the Greenup County dermatologist can help improve Kentucky’s health care. Ditty’s opponents see more than health care on McConnell’s campaign plate.
