NY: Senate Majority Leader’s Son Resigns from Senate Post

It may be the shortest Senate staff tenure on record. Former state Assemblyman Pedro G. Espada was hired just last week as deputy director of intergovernmental relations, a newly-created, $120,000-a-year position. When the hire came to light in press reports, Republicans and good government groups cried foul.

Espada’s father, Bronx Senator Pedro Espada, deserted the Democrats in a coup in June, returning after five weeks of gridlock in exchange for the lucrative Majority Leader position.

He and the Democratic leadership deny his son’s hire was part of any deal, but an official in Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s office said yesterday that prosecutors were looking into whether the hiring violated state law against nepotism.
